Beyond the Hype: 3 Small-Cap Defense Stocks with Real Backlogs

Tue, Mar 3, 2026

The "peace dividend" feels like a distant memory... the world is rearming, and the numbers in the FY2026 U.S. Defense Budget prove it. We are looking at $839B in requested spending. It isn’t just about big planes and tanks anymore. The focus has shifted toward "attritable" systems—cheap, replaceable tech—and space-based defense.

I went looking for the outliers in this new landscape... the companies that win regardless of the noise. To keep my head straight, I ran these names through my 10x Stock Checklist: My Exact 47-Point Analysis Framework. It helps me ignore the social media chatter and focus on the cold, hard backlog.

1. Rocket Lab (RKLB) - The New Standard in Space

SpaceX gets the headlines for the massive Starship launches, but Rocket Lab is quietly becoming the spine of the small-satellite market. They aren't just a "rocket company" anymore; 70% of their revenue now comes from building the actual satellite systems. They have a $1.85B backlog that is starting to convert into real cash flow.

The financials looked good, but I had to be sure. So I ran it through my 10x Stock Checklist: My Exact 47-Point Analysis Framework... and it passed the 'Management Integrity' check with flying colors. Peter Beck has a habit of doing exactly what he says he will do.

  • Price: $69.89
  • YoY Revenue Growth: 38%
  • Gross Margin: 38% (GAAP)
  • The Moat: The only proven, reusable small-launch vehicle in the West besides SpaceX.

2. Red Cat Holdings (RCAT) - The Frontline Disruptor

This is the risky one. Red Cat is in the business of tactical drones. With the U.S. banning Chinese-made DJI drones for federal use, there is a massive vacuum. Their "Teal 2" and "Black Widow" drones are filling it. The revenue growth is explosive right now because of the Blue UAS mandate, but the volatility is real.

This one is volatile. Before I even think about buying, I go to TradingView (/tradingview). I set my indicators to the Weekly view to see the bigger picture. Specifically, I look at the RSI... if it's below 30, I'm interested. If you want to find other stocks like this, use the Screener (/tradingview-screener) and filter for 'Market Cap < 2B' and 'Rel Vol > 2'. It's the easiest way to spot momentum before the news does.

  • Price: $12.45
  • Revenue Growth: 1,842% (Preliminary Q4)
  • Risk: High burn rate and potential for further share dilution.
  • The Catalyst: March 18, 2026 Earnings report will confirm if the growth is sustainable.

3. Parsons Corporation (PSN) - The Digital Architect

I like "pick and shovel" plays. Parsons doesn't make the missiles that intercept threats; they build the software and ground stations that tell the missiles where to go. They are the lead architects for the "Golden Dome" hypersonic defense shield. It’s a boring business compared to rockets, which is exactly why I like it.

  • Price: $67.52
  • Margins: 10.4% (Infrastructure)
  • Cash Flow: Consistently positive free cash flow.
  • The Moat: High-clearance federal contracts that are almost impossible for new competitors to steal.

The Reality Check

I want to be clear... I could be wrong. Small caps in the defense sector are tied to the whims of a single budget cycle. If the "Golden Dome" project gets its funding slashed in a surprise policy shift, Parsons takes a hit. If Rocket Lab’s Neutron rocket has a failure during its first test flight later this year, the stock will crater. This isn't a "set it and forget it" sector.

My Plan

I am starting my position in Rocket Lab first. I’ve been watching the $65 level for a clean entry point. Red Cat is on my "high-conviction" watchlist, but I am waiting for the TradingView RSI to cool off before I chase that 1,800% revenue spike.

Investing in small caps is a minefield. If you want to see exactly how I vet these companies to avoid zeroes, grab my 10x Stock Checklist: My Exact 47-Point Analysis Framework. It helps me stay objective when the hype gets loud.

Conclusion

The defense landscape is changing fast. By the end of March 2026, many of these contract awards will be set in stone. Before you open a position, make sure it passes your own sniff test. Download my 10x Stock Checklist to run the full audit.
